Applying to UCT Law

Application Process:
Applications for all UCT LLB programmes must be submitted through the undergraduate application system, as all three LLB options are considered undergraduate degrees. These include:

  • The 4-year LLB (direct entry after high school)

  • The 3-year Graduate LLB (for applicants with a first degree)

  • The 2-year Combined Graduate Stream LLB

Important Note on Professional Qualification

Under South Africa’s Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014, the LLB degree is the standard legal qualification required for admission as an advocate or attorney.

  • To become an advocate, graduates typically:

    • Join a Bar Association

    • Complete pupillage (training) with a practising advocate

    • Pass a Bar admission exam

  • To become an attorney, graduates must:

    • Complete articles of clerkship by working under a practising attorney

    • Attend a practical legal training course or perform community service, which may reduce the required period of articles

    • Pass the attorney’s admission exam set by the provincial Law Society

Please note: Holding an LLB degree does not automatically entitle non-South African citizens to practise law in South Africa. Additional legal and immigration requirements apply.
