UCC/GNAT/GES Switch Program Admission Requirements; Apply here

The University of Cape Coast (UCC), in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Ghana Education Service (GES), has introduced a one-year Bachelor of Education (BEd) program to enable basic school teachers to teach at the senior high school level. The program, named SWITCH, is a specialisation program that will equip teachers with in-depth knowledge and pedagogical skills in their chosen subject areas. The program will also involve a teaching practice component at the senior high school level under supervision.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply for the SWITCH program, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a degree in basic education: Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree in basic education, showcasing their foundational knowledge in the field.
  • Be an in-service teacher: Applicants must be currently teaching at the basic school level or have taught at that level before.
  • Have relevant subject background: Applicants must have studied the subject they want to specialise in at the university level or have passed it at the senior high school level.

NOTE: Please note that individuals holding diplomas or Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are not eligible to apply for this programme.

How to apply?

Interested applicants should follow these steps to apply for the SWITCH program:

  • Visit the UCC website at topup.ucc.edu.gh and fill out the online application form. No fee is required before filling out the form.
  • Choose the program of your choice and the study centre that offers it, in line with your subject area. There are currently 10 study centres across the country, and more will be created based on the location of the majority of applicants.
  • Submit the application form and wait for confirmation from UCC. Qualified applicants will be enrolled automatically onto their choice of program.

What are the fees and duration?

The SWITCH program is a three-semester program that will run for one year, starting from July/August 2024. The program will adopt a blended learning approach, combining face-to-face sessions on weekends and online sessions on weekdays. The fees per semester range between GHS 1500 to GHS 1600, with flexible terms of payment.

What are the benefits?

The SWITCH program is a great opportunity for basic school teachers to upgrade their qualifications and skills, and to expand their career prospects. By completing the program, teachers will be able to:

  • Teach at the senior high school level, where there is a high demand for qualified teachers in various subject areas.
  • Earn a higher salary and enjoy better working conditions, as senior high school teachers are paid more than basic school teachers.
  • Enhance their professional development and competence, as the program will expose them to the latest trends and best practices in secondary education.

Conclusion

The SWITCH program is a unique and innovative initiative that aims to address the challenges of teacher education and quality in Ghana. It is a win-win situation for both teachers and students, as it will improve the supply and quality of teachers at the senior high school level, and ultimately enhance the learning outcomes of students. The program is open for application until 10th June 2024, and interested teachers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. 1. Yes, you can apply. There’s a centre at Accra. You can teach at SHS after your degree. Distance forms are also out.

  6. Please, good afternoon. I offered a degree program in SHS. But I’m teaching at the basic level. Do I still have to do the switch before I can teach at the senior high school?

    1. No need to switch. Just gather necessary documents, link up or visit any SHS head or SHS teacher for vacancy. It’s easier to get SHS in remote areas than in cities. Give it a try.
