The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers financial support to South African students from low-income households who want to study at public universities and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) colleges.
Eligibility Criteria for NSFAS Funding
1. South African Citizens Only
- Only South African citizens with valid ID numbers qualify.
- International students, including permanent residents, are not eligible.
2. Financial Need
- Your combined household income (parents/guardians or your own if independent) must be R350,000 or less per year.
- For students with disabilities, the income threshold is higher at R600,000 or less.

- NSFAS does not fund private institutions.
