Eligibility Criteria for South African Students

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers financial support to South African students from low-income households who want to study at public universities and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) colleges.

Eligibility Criteria for NSFAS Funding

1. South African Citizens Only

  • Only South African citizens with valid ID numbers qualify.
  • International students, including permanent residents, are not eligible.

2. Financial Need

  • Your combined household income (parents/guardians or your own if independent) must be R350,000 or less per year.
  • For students with disabilities, the income threshold is higher at R600,000 or less.

3. Enrolled at a Public Institution

  • You must be applying to or currently enrolled at a public university or TVET college in South Africa.
  • NSFAS does not fund private institutions.

4. Academic Requirements

  • First-time students must meet minimum entry requirements for their course.
  • Returning students must satisfy their institution’s academic progression criteria (usually passing a percentage of courses).

5. SASSA Grant Beneficiaries

  • If you receive any grant from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), you automatically qualify regardless of household income.

6. Limited Postgraduate Funding

  • NSFAS mainly funds undergraduate studies.
  • Some essential postgraduate programs in fields like teaching, nursing, and other critical professions may qualify.

Who Should NOT Apply?

  • Students with a household income above R350,000 (unless disabled, then up to R600,000).
  • International students.
  • Students studying at private institutions.

What Does NSFAS Cover?

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation (on-campus or approved off-campus)
  • Meal allowances
  • Books and learning materials
  • Transport costs (where applicable)

Conclusion

If you’re a South African citizen from a low-income household planning to study at a public university or TVET college, NSFAS could provide the financial support you need. Be sure to check your eligibility and apply during the official application period, usually from September to January.
